The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development Video

Dr. Richard Lerner, Director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University, talks about 4-H and positive youth development in an interview on the "Today Show."

According to longitudinal research conducted by the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University (The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development), when compared to their non-4-H peers, adolescents who participate in 4-H programs are:
? Nearly two times more likely to get better grades in school;
? Nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college;
? 41 percent less likely to engage in risky behaviors; and
? 25 percent more likely to positively contribute to their families and communities.

The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development also found that young people involved in 4-H perform better in science, engineering and technology subjects and are more likely to pursue science careers.

--- which is why I believe that most parents do not consider their children good solely because they don't do bad things... This point is overly stressed in Dr. Lerner's studies and? it is too much of a far-fetched ideology to elaborate on. Initial studies which prove that parents of developing adolescents would help support his theory of positive youth development.

Dr. Lerner proposes a very validated point in regards to developing adolescents. However, I find his theory to be overly stressed on the false perception of parents rewarding their children due to an absence of bad characteristics. Typically, this is where critiquing the parent should come into play. All developing adolescents certainly consume great strengths as human beings, however, any intellectual parent should know? that they shouldn't consider their child good because they don't do drugs..
